JUDGING PROCEDURE

  1. All entries in a particular category will be judged by the same panel of peer judges.
  2. In each category, unless otherwise specified, there may be one award, more than one award, or no award. Entries will be judged on their own merit and not in competition with other entries.
  3. All entries will be judged by one or more of the Regional Emmy Chapters of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
  4. Programming entries will be judged for Content, Creativity, and Execution. Crafts Achievement entries will be judged for Creativity and Execution. All entries will be judged against a standard of excellence and will not compete with each other.
  5. LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH:  Spanish-language entries may be entered and will be judged by a panel of Spanish-speaking, peer judges in a separate contest from English language. The scores produced by these two panels are not combined; instead the scores are interpreted separately for final “cut-off” evaluation. English and Spanish Nominees are awarded on the same evening.
  6. NON-COMPETITIVE JUDGING: Entries are judged against a standard of excellence and do not compete against each other. There may be one award, more than one award or no award given in each category.  Any exceptions will be noted in the category description.

GrayRULE
HOW DO I CHANGE THE CATEGORY NAME OF AN ENTRY ALREADY SUBMITTED?

WE must change the category for you. Please send the entry’s EMMY® Express email receipt to CONTACT US, requesting the entry category to be changed to the new category. Please advise if the video has been uploaded.

HOW DO I DELETE AN ENTRY ALREADY SUBMITTED?

Find the Entry Email Receipt, reply and ask to have this entry deleted.  Please advise if you have an uploaded video.

MUST I USE THE TITLE “PRODUCER” ON MY ENTRY?

No. You need not use the actual title “Producer” unless it applies. Please use your appropriate credit as related to the entry.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE LISTED ON THE ENTRY?

In order to maintain a high level of award excellence, Chapters must continue to self-regulate their entries, making sure only the appropriate individuals are recognized. To maintain this consistency, there is a maximum quota of 12 eligible names allowed on each entry.

Any name(s) added beyond this number will require written authorization from the primary responsible entrant detailing the additional job title and responsibility. Chapters would then have the option of accepting these additional entrants or not.

CAN WE JUST LIST AN ENTRANT AS “STAFF”, “NEW TEAM” OR “COMPANY X”?

You may NOT list any entrant name as “Staff,” “News Team”, “Company X”, etc. EMMY® statuette are awarded to individuals, not to their employers, stations or companies. All entries must include the name and production credit for each individual.

GrayRULEHOW CAN I ADD MY NAME OR OTHER ENTRANTS TO AN ENTRY ALREADY SUBMITTED?

Names may be added to the entry form up to May 31, 2018, subject to appropriate entry fees and late penalties. Only the individuals listed on the entry form are eligible to become nominees and receive statuettes or plaques.

Please find the submitter of the entry, ask them to forward you the EMMY® Express email receipt. At the bottom of the entry is a link to modify the entry.

GrayRULEDEFINITIONS OF TERMS:

COMPOSITE: A composite is defined as a sampling of two or more representative segments or elements that convey to a judging panel the scope, breadth or range of an individual’s talents or of coverage of a special event. The elements within a composite, unless otherwise noted, are to be “as aired” with no internal edits or post production work, such as music or special effects. Demo reels or montages are not allowed. One to two seconds of black between cuts, with no audio or slates must be added to separate segments within the composite. Unless otherwise noted, a straight lift from a long work may be included as an element of a composite, but there must be no editing of the lift. For program entries, composites may only contain content from one episode of the series, not multiple installments.

PROGRAM/SEGMENT: Categories with a Program/Segment designation allow for entry of a full-length program or a complete segment from a full-length program. Time limits are noted in the category description. To bring longer formatted programs into time compliance, the entrant may take three complete lifts from the original program.

SHORT FORM: Think “spot length” – or generally 1:00 minute or less. Examples would be PSA’s, commercials, news promotions, pre-produced cold opens, teases, etc.

SERIES (News): Two or more reports covering the same story. A composite of unrelated stories is not a series. Series entries must include a minimum of 2 reports.

SERIES (Program): A program that appears in essentially the same format two or more times a year.

SPECIAL: A one-time-only program or a program from a series that appears in a substantially different format and may or may not be broadcast or cablecast in a period other than its regular time.

PRODUCER: The person(s) most be directly responsible for the majority of the content and production elements of the entry. Anchors, hosts, reporters, writers, photographers, editors, assignment editors, producers, directors and qualified others may qualify as a “Producer” if their contributions are significant to the entry’s award-worthiness. Executive Producers are not eligible for EMMY® statuettes unless directly involved in the hands-on production of the work submitted.

NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated in the category description, program entries may be entered in only one programming category. In programming categories, an entry is defined as a single program or segment, or in the case of news, one story or a series of stories directly related to each other.

HOW TO PREPARE MY VIDEO FOR UPLOAD:

“How Do I Upload My Video” Full Instructions

Video File Upload Recommendations:

  • The video file size should not be larger than 2 GB for ease of uploading.
  • The video width should be 768 or larger for better viewing experience for the judge.

What format do I use to upload my entry?

For best quality, encode your video at its original size.

  • 1920×1080 or 1280x720p is recommended
  • Your video should be at least 768 or larger

Do NOT letterbox your video

GrayRULE

HOW DO I SHORTEN A FULL-LENGTH PROGRAM TO COMPLY WITH ENTRY TIME LIMITS?

Full-length programs may be shortened by taking up to three (3) complete lifts from the program. In other words, a maximum of three edits is permitted to bring longer programs to the time limit. We encourage the use of the synopsis to help judges navigate the entry.

For more information to prepare your video, read more!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

USING THE SCROLL DOWN MENU FOR SUBMITTING ORGANIZATION:

For best results, we recommend that you enter the Organization Name. This will ensure that all your entries show up under YOUR Dashboard, when it’s time to review and pay.

WHAT IS THE EMMY EXPRESS DASHBOARD AND SHOULD I USE IT?

If you enter more than three entries and want to pay only one invoice, an easy solution is to use the EMMY® EXPRESS Dashboard for your Organization.

EMMY® EXPRESS Organization Dashboard:  This dashboard is a feature that allows a designated ‘administrator’ to review, change, approve and pay for their company’s entries. The dashboard is an option for companies/groups with a large number of entries. If you would like to utilize this feature, please use CONTACT US.

GrayRULE

WHO GETS TO KEEP THE EMMY® STATUETTE?

EMMY® statuettes will only be given to individual recipient(s) who were properly listed on the entry forms and for whom entry fees were properly paid. Each recipient will receive a separate statuette. EMMY® Awards are presented to individuals, not to their employers. Ownership of the EMMY® statuette is retained by the individuals and The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, even if an employer pays entry fees.

CAN I PURCHASE DUPLICATE STATUETTES, CERTIFICATES AND PLAQUES?

Stations, studios and production companies may order a Commemorative statuette for public display at their place of business (up to a maximum of three per awarded entry). The statuette is engraved the same as the actual EMMY® Award, with the word “Commemorative” added on the rear of the statuette. More information can be found HERE

Nomination Certificates are issued by REQUEST ONLY to nominees, following verification of nomination. Please contact the Lone Star EMMY® office to request a certificate.
